Montana on the Fly Fishing Reports

Author: Nate Plagmann Comments:
Location: Bighorn Fishing has been great this winter on the Bighorn. Nymphing is catching a lot of fish and pulling streamers has been a great way to move some bigger fish. Black and white seems to be getting the most action. Fish a sink tip line and a shorter leader to a weighted streamer.

Location: Bighorn River Fishing has been really good on the bighorn for the month of July and into the beginning of August. We had great PMD's and Sally's in July and the fish were starting to look up and eat hoppers. Now the river has slowly been dropping and it has opened up a lot of water for hopper fishing. I think it is going to get better and better as the water comes down in August and September.

Location: Missouri River I am still up on the Missouri River and fishing has still been steady. The fish are starting to move and you can find them off the seams and next to the banks. Caddis and PMD's are starting to pop all over but the fish aren't looking up yet. It's going to be awhile before they start to pod and eat on top. Nymphing and streamers are all your options. I've been getting reports that the Bighorn is fishing good. It's high, clear, and the water temp. is around 55 degrees. Your going to have to like to through led for awhile to catch fish. The rivers are going to be high due to runoff for quite some time this year.

Location: Missouri River I have been up on the Missouri River below Holter Dam for most of May and finihsing up there at the beginning of July. The fishing has been very productive with a lot of big fish caught so far. The water is up, but where isn't it? the good thing is that it's clean and the fish are eating. No dry fly activity to speak of, but nymphing and pulling big streamers are getting big fish. There are only a few oprtions in Montana to get out and wet a line and so far the MO is proving to be the best in the state for the time being.

Location: Bighorn The Bighorn has been fishing very productive the past few weeks. There is a lot of browns ranging in size from 12-16 inches and the fish are piled up in the slow tailouts. Nymphing is great and the fish are on the surface as well. Good luck out there.
